Why the Democratic Party is Hiding its 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

This move from the DNC to block the publication regarding its own post-election analysis on the last presidential race seems shocking yet to be expected. Averse to unpleasant candor, the Democrats' governing body operates more like a publicity machine than a political organization devoted to building local power capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Hesitant to challenge the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the DNC has stayed within the influence of the previous administration all through this past year. Publishing such a report might have shown that party leaders actually want to foster public discourse about the strategic failures that paved the way for Donald Trump to become president again. However, the DNC is proceeding as if there is little to be learned following the stunning loss of 2024.

Our guiding principle: will this lead to victory? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," a justification which was presented for withholding the analysis.

Major Failures an Autopsy Could Have Explored

Any valuable post-mortem of substance would confront a series of difficult topics. These include:

  • Voter Disenchantment: The loss among a significant portion of the electorate who voted for the Democratic ticket during the previous election became a critical factor in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • A Choice to Seek Re-election: The stubborn insistence by a party leader to run again, alongside a last-minute step-aside, is seen by some as robbing Democratic voters the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Abandoning Core Democratic Voters: While facing rising costs, the electoral effort is criticized for bowing to powerful financial backers and not managing to challenge the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Foreign Policy Factor: The refusal to adjust a policy position regarding a ongoing war is cited as alienating key demographic groups, notably with young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Youth Backing: Research shows a major drop-off of Democratic support from young voters.

A History of Evasion

Choosing secrecy fits a recurring tendency of evading hard truths. It recalls a dynamic where the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Congress supported an incumbent's insistence on seeking another term right up until a disastrous campaign event forced a change.

At the same time, a significant majority within the party's base had been consistently telling pollsters that they opposed the incumbent to run again.

Financial Issues

A substantive autopsy would also examine matters about where money went, including what sums were directed to high-priced advisors and media firms during an electoral effort which expended a colossal amount in a short period.

The Broader Problem

At its core, the secrecy of the official autopsy highlights a deference toward the existing power structure responsible for a disastrous presidential campaign. The signal to ordinary supporters – including millions of dedicated activists – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to understand the lessons the insiders have learned based on an analysis compiled from conversations with insiders.

A political entity unable to critically review its own failings finds it difficult to escape the rut that ended up being so helpful to the winning candidate.
